Red Sun Rising “THREAD” Album Review

Updated: Jul 26, 2024

Today's review is also a eulogy. Red Sun Rising was a rock band that created some undeniably strong material while they were active. After their last studio effort, "THREAD," and the 2019 EP "Peel," they disbanded. Why do I feel the need to remember them? It's simple: I appreciate their approach to modern rock music. Though they formed in 2006, they didn't release a studio album until 2016. Their debut, "Polyester Zeal," was good but had its flaws. However, it still featured some rock classics like "The Otherside" and "Emotionless."

Just two years after their debut, the band announced "THREAD" as their second, and unbeknownst to us at the time, their final studio album. This second effort felt immediately more focused and mature. The opener, "Fascination," has strong art rock vibes with a heavy sound, perfectly summarizing the direction the band took while creating this record. While their debut was solid, their full potential truly shines in "THREAD." The songs work better individually, and the overall cohesive feeling is much stronger. The melancholic atmosphere is enhanced by successful vocal delivery and instrumentation, while the heavy moments carry the cathartic essence of the album.

"THREAD's" first half is clearly superior, with the second half containing some filler moments like "Benny Two Dogs," "Rose," and even the closer "Evil Like You." The first half, on the other hand, shines with tracks like "Fascination," "Deathwish," and "El Lazo." Additionally, the fast-paced middle track "Veins" is perfect for jumping around as if you have problems that need solving but keep delaying. It sounds complicated, but trust me, you'll get it.

While Red Sun Rising didn't bring anything groundbreaking to the table with "THREAD," they certainly went out with a bang. The album is full of memorable hooks and packed with emotion. Despite some filler moments and the fact that most of the memorable hooks revolve around the vocal lines, "THREAD" manages to be a solid hard rock effort from a band in their final days. Despite its low points, I highly recommend experiencing "THREAD." Who knows? Maybe there's still a chance for a reunion.
